But maybe they’re slowly breaking inside from the solvent- who knows. Warning- I have no idea how long-term this will affect the AirPod- but it’s worked for me, over a week now and they’re brilliant. To help keep the grill-port being treated down (gravity helping to keep the wd40 out of the AirPod), I used a clothespin to hold the leg of the pod, and pointed the grill down to my work-surface. Treat it the same- treat with qtip, blow back port, repeat until you feel it’s clean. Then after I was satisfied the grill was in shape, I used alcohol to try and clean and displace the WD40. I did this maybe 5-10 times and eventually got all the putty back out of the grill using the solvent I chose (WD40). I’m sure any other method might work here also- ie- blow, observe the putty coming out, and then use a toothpick or qtip to try and collect the fresh grill-putty. (Which was completely blocked with putty for me.) I then let the putty/solvent dry slightly- and used more putty to dab up the solvated putty- don’t press hard, just “grab” the fresh grill-putty lightly with the fresh putty. Doing this a few times the putty started showing up via the grill. I partially blocked the other back port with my finger while holding it for the airduster. Once you’ve found a solvent that works on the putty, the goal is to use a qtip to apply the solvent to the grill, let it sit a bit, and then clean it out.įor me the cleaning out part was achieved by using an office duster on the ear side back port.

Feel free to test multiple balls with multiple liquids in different containers to test for solvation. For me, my test with WD40 showed that it dissolved the putty in the bowl without too much time or struggle. If you have some putty you used left over, grab a small ball of it and a small bowl of some sort- this is to test the ability to dissolve the putty. read all the way to the end especially the disclaimer and my experience- my AirPod was a goner until I did this.
